Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or over. The degree of obesity is classified as:

obesity class 1 (BMI 30 kg/m2 to 34.9 kg/m2)

obesity class 2 (BMI 35 kg/m2 to 39.9 kg/m2) and
-
obesity class 3 (BMI 40 kg/m2 or more).
The NICE guideline on obesity recognises that people of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean ethnicity are prone to central adiposity and their cardiometabolic risk occurs at a lower BMI. So, a lower BMI of 27.5 kg/m2 or above is recommended as the threshold for obesity in these groups.
