NICE has said that HeartLogic and TriageHF can be used for algorithm-based remote monitoring in people with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) who have heart failure.
More research is needed on:
- HeartInsight for algorithm-based remote monitoring in people with CIEDs who have heart failure and
- HeartInsight, HeartLogic and TriageHF for remote monitoring in people with CIEDs who are at risk of developing heart failure.
NICE has said that CorVue should not be used for algorithm-based remote monitoring in people with CIEDs who have or are at risk of developing heart failure. Evidence suggests that CorVue misses some signs of worsening heart failure and has a high rate of alerts that are not followed by worsening heart failure (false positives).
Heart failure is when the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. Some people who have or are at risk of developing heart failure are offered CIEDs, which healthcare professionals can use to monitor how their heart is working.
Remote monitoring is the ability of some CIEDs to wirelessly send information about the heart to a remote monitoring system, so that it can be reviewed by a healthcare professional. Algorithm-based remote monitoring allows the CIED to analyse small changes in how the heart is working. If it detects the early signs of worsening heart failure the CIED wirelessly sends an alert to a healthcare professional. This means the person can get treatment as quickly as possible and avoid unnecessary hospital visits.
Is this technology right for me?
Your healthcare professionals should give you clear information, talk with you about your options and listen carefully to your views and concerns. Your family can be involved too, if you wish. Read more about making decisions about your care.
Questions to think about
- How well does it work compared with other ways of monitoring?
- What are the risks? How likely are they?
- What happens if I do not want to use this technology?
- What happens if the technology does not work?
- How is the algorithm-based monitoring activated? Can this be done at my local clinic or hospital? How long will it take?
- How does the device send alerts? Do I need an internet connection?
- How will my information be used, if it is collected?
