NICE has said Synergo shows potential in high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer that has not got better, or has come back, after BCG treatment. It also has potential if people cannot have or do not want BCG. But there’s not enough good evidence to be able to recommend that it’s used in the NHS. So NICE has recommended that further research should be done.
Synergo heats the bladder wall using microwave energy and flushes the bladder with a chemotherapy drug at the same time. It’s an alternative to radical cystectomy (removing the bladder). It’s also an alternative to regular cystoscopies (a procedure to look inside the bladder to check for tumours and remove them if necessary) if you cannot have or do not want cystectomy.
