Resource impact statement
The 2024 update of NICE's guideline on acute kidney injury replaces the version published in 2019, which was last updated in 2023. The guideline reviews the evidence on assessing risk factors for acute kidney injury in adults having iodine-based contrast media.
We expect that the resource impact of this update:
- for any single guideline recommendation in England will be less than £1 million per year (or approximately £1,800 per 100,000 population, based on a population for England of 57.1 million people) and
- for implementing the whole guideline in England will be less than £5 million per year (or approximately £8,800 per 100,000 population, based on a population for England of 57.1 million people).
The recommendations in this update are likely to reduce the volume of eGFR testing, with a set of screening questions removing the need for an eGFR test in people who have a low risk of kidney disease. The timeframe for which an existing eGFR test can be relied upon has also been expanded from 3 months to 6 months. We do not expect the resource impact of these changes to be substantial but there may be a benefit to the resources required to take, analyse and review these tests.
Acute kidney injury services are commissioned by integrated care boards. Providers are NHS hospital trusts.
