Question

Second-line maintenance therapy in children and young people (under 16):- Is maintenance therapy more effective with a paediatric low dose of ICS plus a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) or with a paediatric low dose of ICS plus a long-acting beta2 agonist (LABA) in the treatment of asthma in children and young people (under 16) who have uncontrolled asthma on a paediatric low dose of ICS alone?

Why this is important:- There is a lack of evidence on managing asthma in children and young people under 16. Many of the recommendations for children and young people in this guideline were made using extrapolation from the adult evidence and the consensus of the guideline committee. The guideline committee would like to encourage more research in this age group. This particular question was prioritised because it affects the early stages of the treatment pathway and could have significant clinical and cost implications for managing asthma in this age group.
