Multiple myeloma is an incurable and progressive condition that has a substantial impact on survival and quality of life. Complications of multiple myeloma can be significant, debilitating and painful. The relapsing-remitting nature of the condition has a huge psychological impact, because people are aware that treatment options and life expectancy reduce with each relapse. The patient organisation submission stated that there is a clear need for innovative treatments that deliver deep, durable responses for people with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma. One patient expert explained how myeloma symptoms affected her physical health and made her feel very tired. She needs care from her husband and had to stop working as a nurse. The committee recognised the substantial impact multiple myeloma has on survival and quality of life. It acknowledged the unmet need for effective treatments for people with multiple myeloma who have already had several treatments.
