Provision of services for chronic tic disorders and Tourette syndrome varies across the NHS. Barriers to access include a shortage of trained therapists and limited access to behavioural therapy, which is only available at a small number of specialist treatment centres. As a result, experts estimate that less than 20% of children and young people with chronic tic disorders and Tourette syndrome currently have access to behavioural therapies (Marino et al. 2023). Clinical experts noted that there is often a long waiting list for referral to specialist services.
