Reason for decision Anticipate the topic will be of importance to patients, carers, professionals, commissioners and the health of the public to ensure clinical benefit is realised, inequalities in use addressed, and help them make the best use of NHS resources
Description Bed frames (bed without the mattress) are used in a wide range of clinical and care settings. This assessment will focus on bed frames for use in acute care settings. There are many essential characteristics for bed frames, including no sharp edges, height adjustment, a setting for use during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and compatibility with different types of mattresses. Acute bed frames have additional requirements, such as the facility to attach accessories, a cardiac chair position facility and specified side rails. Bed design features can support healthcare workers with tasks such as transportation and repositioning of patients. They can also help keep patients in an optimal position to aid recovery and reduce the risk of pressure ulcers. Some designs may help improve decontamination procedures for better infection control. Innovative patient safety features in care settings may include bed exit alarms and under-bed anti-entrapment sensors. Technologies in widespread or established use in the NHS often undergo continuous improvement or incremental innovation, leading to price variation. This NICE assessment aims to support commissioning and procurement decisions by assessing if the value added by incremental innovation justifies the price variation.
