NICE has said the VAC Veraflo Therapy system shows potential. But there’s not enough good evidence to be able to recommend that it’s used in the NHS. So NICE has recommended that further research is done to find out how well it works compared with an alternative treatment called negative pressure wound therapy.
The system consists of a dressing that covers the wound, attached by tubes to a machine that slowly introduces cleansing fluid onto the wound. The fluid stays for a time and then is slowly drawn away (negative pressure) from the wound, along with wound and tissue fluid. This happens repeatedly, so the wound can be regularly cleaned without needing to remove the dressing.
