The condition and the treatments
Hip arthritis is inflammation of the hip joint. It causes pain and stiffness in the joint, and can affect mobility. End-stage hip arthritis is when the joint is severely damaged, and surgery is needed to help stop pain and reduce disability.
In total hip replacement, the hip socket is completely replaced with a cup and the top of the thigh bone is completely replaced with a stem and head. Artificial hips can be made with various materials. In hip resurfacing, the hip socket and the top of the thigh bone are both lined with metal.
