Rationale
Smoking is the most important cause of preventable ill health and premature death in the UK. Smoking rates are higher in people diagnosed with severe mental illness compared to the rest of the population. This indicator can be used to inform local service needs assessment.
Source guidance
Tobacco: preventing uptake, promoting quitting and treating dependence. NICE guideline NG209 (2021), recommendations 1.11.1 and 1.11.6.
Specification
Numerator: The number in the denominator who are identified as current smokers.
Denominator: The number of people with a diagnosis of severe mental illness.
Calculation: Numerator divided by the denominator, multiplied by 100.
Exclusions: Patients in remission from severe mental illness.
Data source: Clinical Commissioning Group Outcomes Indicator Set dataset 1.23: smoking rates in people with serious mental illness (SMI).
Minimum population: The indicator would be appropriate to assess the performance of networks or systems of providers.
