3 Approach to developing methods and processes for including NICE technology appraisal recommendations in guideline topic areas

    3.1

Developing methods and processes to support including NICE technology appraisal recommendations in guideline topic areas has several stages:

    • In the first stage, this interim statement sets out the general principles guiding NICE's approach to including NICE technology appraisal recommendations in guideline topic areas. It also describes what the key changes are to existing methods and processes.

    • NICE will consult on this statement, then consider responses from stakeholders to the consultation, amend it when necessary and publish a final version.

    • NICE will pilot these interim methods and processes in selected updates of guideline topics. This stage will inform the development of more detailed methods and processes to support including NICE technology appraisal recommendations into guideline topic areas.

    • After piloting these interim methods and processes, final methods and processes for including NICE technology appraisal recommendations in guideline topic areas will be consulted on. They will then be finalised and published in NICE's methods and processes manuals.

    3.3

NICE's programmes for technology appraisals and guidelines have different remits, and their methods and processes have evolved to reflect this. To support including NICE technology appraisal recommendations in guideline topic areas, NICE recognises the need for closer alignment of the methods and processes underpinning guidance development across the different programmes. When approaches differ (for example, using decision modifiers in the NICE health technology evaluations manual), NICE has sought to align them (when appropriate), taking into account the following principles:

    • access to the right treatments for patients and clinicians

    • protection of the NHS budget

    • operational feasibility for NICE and its system partners

    • ensuring methodologically robust and suitable approaches.
