Currently, NICE's guidance is published according to the programme that developed it. This means that users can find it harder to access and navigate all NICE recommendations about a condition because they must search in multiple places to find them.
NICE wants to bring together and make it easier for users to find all its guidance about a condition. To do this, it proposes developing 2 approaches for including NICE technology appraisal recommendations in guideline topic areas. The aim is to provide a better experience for users and help increase the adoption of NICE guidance, leading to better outcomes for patients and better use of NHS resources. These approaches are:
incorporating NICE technology appraisal recommendations into NICE guideline topic areas
integrating NICE technology appraisal recommendations into NICE guideline topic areas.
NICE technology appraisal recommendations within the scope of a guideline will be incorporated by presenting the technology appraisal recommendations unchanged in the guideline. No assessment will be done comparing the intervention with other treatment options. The NICE technology appraisal recommendations and funding requirement (when applied for positive recommendations) will remain in place. Incorporation will enable NICE to provide useful and useable guidance in a timely way.
Treatments specified in NICE technology appraisal guidance published over 3 years ago that are within the scope of a guideline topic area will be considered for integration into that area when:
there are multiple treatment options in a decision space, and
there is no clear rationale for guiding treatment decisions (see the section on the methods and processes for integrating NICE technology appraisal recommendations into guideline topic areas).
NICE technology appraisal recommendations will be integrated by doing comparative analyses of the costs and benefits for all appropriate treatment options in that decision space. Integration will only be used if the criteria set out in the section on criteria and triggers for integrating NICE technology appraisal recommendations into guideline topic areas are met. Integration will enable NICE to:
publish robust, comprehensive and up-to-date guideline recommendations that provide clarity for users in areas with multiple treatment options
set out a clear clinical pathway of treatments based on clinical- and cost-effectiveness assessments of all treatment options.
