Evidence
How we made the decision
We check our guidelines regularly to ensure they remain up to date. We based the decision on surveillance 2 years after the publication of NICE's guideline on oral health for adults in care homes (NICE guideline NG48) in 2016.
For details of the process and update decisions that are available, see ensuring that published guidelines are current and accurate in developing NICE guidelines: the manual.
Evidence
We found 16 studies in a search for all study types published between 1 September 2014 and 29 January 2018.
We also checked for relevant ongoing research, which will be evaluated again at the next surveillance review of the guideline.
See appendix A: summary of evidence from surveillance for details of all evidence considered, and references.
Views of topic experts
We considered the views of topic experts, including those who helped to develop the guideline. Three topic experts responded, and all agreed with the decision not to update the guideline at this time. Comments included concern about diminishing access to general dental practitioners and the highlighting of an early study application regarding the care home population and oral health. The views of topic experts were considered during the surveillance review, see appendix A: summary of evidence from surveillance for details.
Views of stakeholders
Stakeholders commented on the decision not to update the guideline. Overall, 4 stakeholders commented. See appendix B for stakeholders' comments and our responses.
Three stakeholders agreed with the decision not to update the guideline and 1 disagreed. Comments included concern about a lack of research for the care home environment, the use of chewing gum in the care home population, callouts and commissioning, and diabetes and periodontal disease. After consideration, it was concluded that these issues were acknowledged during guideline development and reflected in the recommendations.
See ensuring that published guidelines are current and accurate in developing NICE guidelines: the manual for more details on our consultation processes.
The NICE project team would like to thank the topic experts who participated in the surveillance process.
